As the results started to come out from Lebanon's general elections, the Beirut 1 district appeared to be swept by Christian groups from the pro-western "March 14" alliance. As exit polls projected the win for March 14, supporters of the Lebanese Forces and Phalange parties came out to the Ashrafiyeh neighborhood's Sassine Square to celebrate. At around 1am Nadim Gemayel made a suprise appearance and briefly addressed supporters. Nadim Gemayel is the son of the Phalange party founder, Pierre Gemayel. Nadim's father, Bashir was assasinated in 1982 during the Lebanese civil war and remains one of the most popular icons of many of the Lebanon's Maronite Christians. The 27-year-old Nadim Gemayel will be one of Lebanon's youngest parliamentarians. The celebrations at Sassine were one of Lebanon's first celebrations after the elections ended on 7 June. ///March 14 alliance supporters celebrate their victory in the elections at Beirut's Sassine Square.
