On 7 June 2009 Lebanese went to the polls in what was supposed to be a highly contested Lebanese elections between the western backed "March 14" alliance led by the mostly Sunni Muslim party, the Future Movement, that faced off against an opposition including the Shia Muslim movement, Hizballah. Allied with Hizballah was former Lebanese general Michel Aoun's Free Patriotic Movement. It was the FPM that was supposed to take more seats than they received, which would've given the majority of seats in the Lebanese parliament. In the end, it was the governing March 14 alliance who would claim victory taking 71 seats compared to 54 for the opposition out of a total of 128 parliamentary seats available.
